In 2017, two dedicated law enforcement professionals, Police Officer Jorge Rochez, Detective Sidney Valerio, saw an urgent need within their community and took action. Together, they rallied uniformed members of Garifuna descent from the New York Police Department and beyond, igniting a powerful movement that would reshape the landscape of law enforcement support networks. Their vision birthed the Garifuna American in Law Enforcement Association Inc. (GALA), a beacon of unity and empowerment for Garifuna officers and allies alike. Deputy Warden Idi Guity of the New York City Department of Corrections.
